My NYFW Edit
Oversized shirts, lightweight knitwear worn with breezy skirts, everything Tibi, knitted ponchos and more.
The older I get, the more I crave comfort and practicality without abandoning my own style. I increasingly desire to feel comfortable, stylish, and attractive, precisely the vibe my favorite looks from NYFW are giving me.
When I first thought about the topic of this newsletter post, I was still determining which direction to give it. Whether I wanted to share my favorite runway shows, favorite styling, or deliver a well-thought trend report. Or everything!
I'm not a fashion critic. So don't expect me to give you my opinion on collections. I'm a stylist and, most importantly, a consumer. My job is to appreciate clothes and select the ones I love most. Designing a collection is tricky. I know because I worked closely with a designer for five years. Fulfilling people's expectations is even more challenging. I'm not going to try to sound knowledgeable; I'm merely going to share what excited me the most. One thing I will tell you about the shows at NYFW, despite the differences of opinion circulating the web, is that I saw (from the comfort of my living room in Miami because I did not attend any shows) many beautiful looks that women can wear daily. A few of these looks are no groundbreaking ideas, but highly wearable they sure are. And what is fashion for if not to be worn?
It was difficult to choose because I saw so many things that I loved, but here are my top looks of NYFW. These are looks I would wear in real life, not just my dreams. Things that go well with my age, body type, lifestyle, and personal style. Perhaps you'll find inspiration in them, too. Also, let me know in the comments below if you have a favorite NYFW show or look and which one. I’d love to know what rocks your boat.
Proenza Schouler
For many, it was the separates, or the sheer pieces, for me it was the dresses at Proenza Schouler.
3.1 Phillip Lim
Phillip Lim was the show that had the most looks I loved. He may not be the designer du jour right now, although he was fifteen years ago (more or less); I've always liked his collections (I wore a Phillip Lim dress for my brother's wedding) and probably always will. If he continues to deliver style like this, I will. It was the oversized shirt styled with a sheer flowy skirt that really won my heart.
Altuzarra
It's a skirt moment at Altuzarra. Boxy blazers, oversized shirts, and lightweight knitwear are all worn with a straight skirt, some in thicker fabrics, some in more delicate, and some a mix of both. Skirts are having a moment, and I’m loving it!
Tibi
If I could choose one brand to wear for the rest of my life it would be Tibi. It’s cool, it’s chill, it’s modern, it’s versatile, it’s chic, it’s easy to wear, it fits well. It’s perfect, and I love it.
Ashlyn
Ashlyn, a finalist for the 2022 LVMH Prize, who worked as a designer and patternmaker for Yohji Yamamoto, was part of the creative team at Alexander Wang, and worked alongside Raf Simmons during his tenure as Creative Director at Calvin Klein, is an artist who understands powerful femininity and timeless elegance. I wish I had the words to describe my love for her unique designs and impeccable craftsmanship.
Bonus
A few more looks that I loved. Oversized button-up white dresses at Rachel Comey, insane wide-legged trousers at Puppets & Puppets, structured jackets worn with skirts over pants at Jason Wu, and once again, oversized shirts with lacey skirts at Michael Kors.
Diotima
Gabriela Hearst
Maria McManus
The Row
Zankov
I will end with Zankov, which I don’t know that I would wear because I would have to feel extremely confident with my body. Still, I love this dress so much. It’s stunning.
Wow, guys! That was a lot. I went through many looks to select these ones, and there are so many more designers that I did not look at. The amount of designers trying hard to put their creations out there is overwhelming. I know many people favor second-hand, pre-loved, vintage, etc., and I get it. Still, I favor supporting independent designers by buying their creations if our budget allows it. Even better if you can do both. Go shopping!
That's all for today. Let's see what London Fashion Week brings to the table. London is well known for being a laboratory of creativity, which is exciting!
Until next, my friends! Stay cool, and remember to make an effort to dress up. You never know who you might inspire.
Much love.
