You guys have no idea how long I've been thinking about writing this specific newsletter, but I would always make an excuse not to do it. Because, you know, at times, I lack self-confidence. Excuses like I need the right selfie mirror, my room needs to be neatly decorated, my clothes are not that cool, I don’t have the right shoes, I need to lose weight, I'm too old to do this, my hair and makeup don't look good...you name it, garbage. It wasn't until today that I felt an inner pressure to move on with my life, and I finally did it. Unfortunately, fear can be a great motivator. I say, unfortunately, because fear is uncomfortable. When you don't feel your best, when you are afraid, when you feel like everything around you is collapsing, do it. I'm preaching to myself. God has equipped us! It doesn't have to be perfect. If we do our part, God will do his. He will use whatever small effort we make and bring something extraordinary out of it. My outfit photos could be better, but you know what? I don't care; I care that I finally did it.
Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the LORD rises to shine on you.
Isaiah 60:1
Now that I’ve provided a long introduction, let's move on to the story.
There was a time in the early 2010s when magazines loved to tell women who they needed to be, what they needed to wear, and what not to wear, and shame on you if you didn't own an expensive piece of furniture or if you didn't know what your signature flower was (I guess they still do the same. Hello Instagram!) One time, around 2011 or 2012, I read an article online on www.harpersbazaar.com that listed several things a woman in her THIRTIES should not wear. I don't remember the complete list, but I remember the following: Daisy Dukes, orange lipstick, sundresses with sneakers, and...overalls. RIDICULOUS!
I was so infuriated by the article that I still haven't forgotten it. The idea that women in their thirties should not wear overalls is crazy. I'm 45, and I still wear overalls. I love to wear overalls; they are my favorite thing to wear. I'm wearing overalls as we speak. If women in their thirties should not wear overalls, what happens to women in their 40s and beyond? The good news is that we live in an age-positive time. More and more women are embracing aging on their terms. These women are redefining being in your 40's, 50's, 60's, and beyond, and I am all for it.
Today, I want to encourage you to wear overalls and be adventurous. Don't let anyone discourage you or put you down. I also want to share how I wear mine. Overalls are all about comfort and freedom without sacrificing coolness. Wearing overalls is about having fun and not taking yourself too seriously. They are about enjoying life.
Everything I’m wearing I bought a long time ago, so you will probably not find most things. I’m linking what you can still find.
White on white
For when I’m going to my local coffee shop to write this newsletter.
White overalls with tuxedo blazer
For when I’m going to church on Sundays.
Denim overalls with sweatshirt
For when I’m going to the farmers market or simply chill at home.
Overalls with vintage blazer and belt
For when I’m going to an art gallery, museum, or going out to brunch/lunch/dinner with friends.
There are so many ways to wear overalls; these are only a few simple ideas. The message is: go for it, be bold, and don’t be afraid to experiment.
A couple of months ago, I bought a pair of Disney brand overalls at a flea market in Miami. Yes, Disney. And you know what? I love them. They're oversized and incredibly comfortable. I mostly wear them when I stay home or go to the farmer's market. Do people think I look good in them? I don't know. What people think is none of my business. My business is how I think and feel about myself. You can't change what people think, but you can change how you think about the way you look and feel. Is this easy? Not at all, but it's not impossible either. My husband loves it when I wear overalls, which is enough for me. The most important thing is that I feel fantastic in them. Overalls give me superpowers.
